There are more than 1,200 patient advocacy organizations within the United States, and each is unique in its offerings.
Some PAOs are national or regional organizations and others are locally-focused.
Some PAOs are focused on only one disease state while others represent multiple disease states.
Some PAOs provide patient educational resources while others are dedicated to raising funds for research.
Some are focused on rare diseases and others support patients with more common illnesses.
Most PAOs can be located online, either through websites or social media. You can find a PAO that is relevant to you by speaking to your healthcare provider or searching online. You can also search through organizations like National Health Council, National Organization of Rare Disease and World Patient Alliance.

Whether you are a patient, caregiver, healthcare professional or general community member, there are a number of ways you can engage with a patient advocacy organization.
Each PAO focuses on different types of activities. You can learn about ways to get involved on their websites or social platforms. You can also reach out to a PAO directly to get involved, subscribe to their newsletters or follow them on social media.
PAO Action Week was established in 2024 as a grassroots effort from the healthcare industry and patient advocacy organizations to raise awareness and encourage engagement with PAOs during a dedicated week.
